Take a moment to open this time in prayer. Ask God to bless you as you read and reflect on the text.

Please read Galatians 4: 1 - 7

We are often known and sadly sometimes defined by our family name. When we are young we are also known as the child of _________ and ____________. When we have children of our own we say that ___________ is my child. However, this passage in the book of Galatians amazingly resets these truths for us spiritually. This passage tells us that we have been adopted by God and that we are no longer a slave but God’s child. That is incredible. We are a child of God! We are in his family and we are now defined by his name. Thus, if God is the King of Kings that makes us all Princes and Princesses! That is indeed good news but it also comes with the responsibility to act with nobility and grace.

Please use the following questions for more reflection.

  • How has your family defined you; in positive and maybe negative ways?

  • Have you ever spent time reflecting on the fact that God chose to adopt you; that you are a child of God? What does that mean to you?

  • If we are a child of God we are a prince or princess. Is that good news for us? How should this change the way we act and interact with others?

Closing - Use the prayer below to end the devotion or close in prayer in your own words.

Gracious Heavenly Father, it is humbling to know that you have adopted me and that I am your child. I ask that this awesome reality be impressed upon me every day. Lord help me to celebrate this adoption and also help me to live out the responsibility of being your child. Amen.
