Take a moment to open this time in prayer. Ask God to bless you as you read and reflect on the text.

Read Acts 1: 1 – 8; 2: 1 - 13

The disciples were told by Jesus that they would be baptized by the Holy Spirit. He told them to wait in Jerusalem until the power of the Holy Spirit came upon them. In Chapter two we read about the power of the Holy Spirit coming upon them on the day of Pentecost. In some churches the Holy Spirit is not really discussed. Those churches do a wonderful job of talking about God the Father and Jesus, God the Son, but they often ignore God the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is a bit of a mystery to some followers of Jesus. However, the Bible tells us that it is the Holy Spirit that is present with us today. We need the power of the Holy Spirit to be present in our lives. This does not mean that we have to speak in another language but it does mean we need to ask God to fill us with the Holy Spirit.

Please use the following questions for more reflection.

  • When you think of the Holy Spirit what images come to mind? What thoughts come to mind? Are you scared, apprehensive, or excited?

  • Where have you seen the power of the Holy Spirit at work?

  • Have you ever asked God to fill you with the Holy Spirit? If not, would you do so today? If you have asked God to fill you with the Holy Spirit, what happened?

Closing - Use the prayer below to end the devotion or close in prayer in your own words.

Gracious Heavenly Father, thank you for not leaving us alone on this earth. Thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Lord, I ask that you fill me now with the Holy Spirit so that I may experience and understand your great love for me and that I may be empowered to do your will on earth. Amen.
