Take a moment to open this time in prayer. Ask God to bless you as you read and reflect on the text.
Read John 11: 1 - 44
This text is the story of the raising of Lazarus. There are many important truths in this text but this devotion will focus on verses 38 – 44. In this text Jesus does the mighty work of raising Lazarus from the dead. However, Jesus is not the only one doing work. Jesus tells people to remove the stone laid across the entrance and he tells them to take off the grave cloths of Lazarus. Certainly, Jesus could have done both actions himself but he involves the people. From this we understand two important truths. First, we have a role, a part, in the work of Jesus. Second, we need to do what we can do (role the stone away, take off the grave cloths) and Jesus will do what only he can do.
Please use the following questions for more reflection.
What work does Jesus want to do in your life, your community, your church?
Are you taking part in the work or do you want Jesus to do all the work? If you are not taking part in that work – what should you be doing?
Why does Jesus include people in his work?
Closing - Use the prayer below to end the devotion or close in prayer in your own words.
Gracious Heavenly Father, you have overcome sin and death and through you all things are possible. Thank you for inviting me to join with you in your work on this earth. Help me to understand the role that you have for me in your work and then empower me to do this work. I ask this so that your power and authority may be evident to all. Amen.
