Take a moment to open this time in prayer. Ask God to bless you as you read and reflect on the text.

Please read 2 John

The book of 2 John, which is a letter, is one of the smallest books of the Bible and thus is often overlooked. Some people may have never read the book. Yet even though the book is small it does have lessons to teach people who seek to follow Jesus. In verse five followers of Jesus are reminded to love one another. The early church lived out this instruction so well that even people who otherwise thought their beliefs foolish still admired their love for one another. The modern church is still called to love in the same way. The text, in verse seven, also warns against people who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This verse also should serve as a warning against false teaching and reminds people that what is believed does matter. Belief and love should go hand in hand.

Please use the following questions for more reflection.

  • What would people who do not believe in Jesus say about the church? Would they say that followers of Jesus are known for loving one another?

  • What could you do to love others more like Jesus loved us?

  • Why does what we believe about Jesus really matter?

Closing - Use the prayer below to end the devotion or close in prayer in your own words.

Gracious Heavenly Father, you call your followers to walk in love. Show me Lord where I have failed to walk in love and help me to imitate your love to other people. Help me as well to stay grounded in right belief about Jesus so that the teaching of Christ may continually transform me. Amen.
