Take a moment to open this time in prayer. Ask God to bless you as you read and reflect on the text.

Please read 1 John 3: 1

In today’s devotion there is only one verse but it is an amazing verse. The one verse teaches all followers of Jesus a truth that should change lives and also holds a theological truth that we should not forget. First, the verse tells us that we are God’s children! This is an incredible truth! This did not happen by chance but God chose to adopt followers of Jesus as his own children with all the rights and privileges of a child. If you are a follower of Jesus; God has adopted you and chosen you! That reality should change one’s life. If God is the Kings of Kings then followers of Jesus, who are the children of God, are princes and princesses. Second, the verse also teaches that sadly not everyone is a child of God. While all people have been created by God not all people are the children of God. This is a fine point of theology but one which should not be forgotten. It is sad but should also spur followers of Jesus to tell others about Jesus so that as many people as possible might be a part of the family.

Please use the following questions for more reflection.

  • What does it mean to you that you are a child of God?

  • The verse declares that followers of Jesus have been lavished with the great love of God. Do you feel lavished by God’s love? If you felt more lavished by God’s love how would this change you?

  • Do you want others to be children of God as well? If so, what are you doing about it?

Closing - Use the prayer below to end the devotion or close in prayer in your own words.

Gracious Heavenly Father, thank you for lavishing your love upon me. I confess that I know you love me but I have forgotten that you have lavished your love on me. Help me to understand and feel your great love so that I may be more like you. Thank you for adopting me as your child. Lord, empower me to help others understand your love so they too will be adopted and join the family of God. Amen.
