Take a moment to open this time in prayer. Ask God to bless you as you read and reflect on the text.

Please read James 1: 19

One characteristic of the Bible is that it is a book of wisdom. In this short little verse is some of the best and most applicable wisdom that the Bible has to offer. This wisdom applies to people who believe in Jesus as well as those who do not believe. Many people like to talk and dispense wisdom but the Bible advises us to be quick to listen and slow to speak. This is turn will reduce our level of anger. All people would be well advised to do more of what this verse tells people to do.

Please use the following questions for more reflection.

  • It is said that since people have two ears and one mouth that we should listen twice as much as we talk. In your opinion does is that statement in conflict or in agreement with this passage from James?

  • What do people seemingly talk so much and listen so little?

  • Of the three recommendations in the verse which one do you need to work on the most?

Closing - Use the prayer below to end the devotion or close in prayer in your own words.

Gracious Heavenly Father, it is wise counsel to listen more, talk less and be less angry but I do not always follow this advice. Lord show me in my life where I should listen more, talk less and be less angry. Then God I ask that you would help me change. Amen.
