Take a moment to open this time in prayer. Ask God to bless you as you read and reflect on the text.

Please read 2 Thessalonians 2: 15 - 17

In these short verses the believers in Thessalonica are encouraged to hold onto the original teaching that they were given. But the believers were also encouraged to do good deeds and have good words. Sometimes people are only concerned with believing the right things about God, having good theology and not as concerned with living out that theology. Others are more concerned with doing good works and not as concerned with right theology. But in this text the believers are encouraged to have right theology and right practices. Followers of Jesus are called to have sound doctrine, good theology and are called to do good deeds and words which should stem from theology. Right belief and right practice go hand in hand and a follower of Jesus should pursue both.

Please use the following questions for more reflection.

  • In verse 15 the believers in Thessalonica are encouraged to hold fast to good teaching that they have received. In other words they were being told to hold onto the essentials of faith. In your opinion what are the essentials of the Christian faith?

  • The believers in Thessalonica are also encouraged toward good deeds and words. Why are followers of Jesus supposed to do good works? What good works do you do?

  • In your life how does good theology lead to good works?

Closing - Use the prayer below to end the devotion or close in prayer in your own words.

Gracious Heavenly Father, there are many distractions in life and many demands on time. Lord in the midst of the distractions; help me to hold fast to the teachings which you have given in the Bible so that I might have the right beliefs. Help me as well to prioritize doing good deeds, not for your approval, but so that I might bless other people in your name. Amen.
