Take a moment to open this time in prayer. Ask God to bless you as you read and reflect on the text.
Please read Colossians 3: 12 - 17
Today one of the largest sections in any bookstore, in the few actual bookstores that still exist, is the self-help section. In those books one will find all manner of advice on how to fulfill one’s dreams, how to live and what steps to take to live your best life now. These verses from Colossians, chapter three, contain the advice of God on how a person should live. These verses advocate that people live with: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, peace, thankfulness, and love. While living this way may or may not lead to worldly success and wealth; living with these attributes will lead to our best life now.
Please use the following questions for more reflection.
From the list of attributes listed above and in the text, which is the easiest for you to live out? Which attribute do you struggle with the most? Why?
Who is one person that you know who, in your opinion, does the best at living out the advice in Colossians 3: 12 – 17? What helps them to live this way? Have you ever asked that person how he/she has developed those traits?
In verse 17 we are told to do everything in the name of Jesus. On a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 being high/good) what number would you give yourself on the scale of doing everything in the name of the Lord? What can you do to move that number just one spot up on the scale?
Closing - Use the prayer below to end the devotion or close in prayer in your own words.
Gracious Heavenly Father, your advice to emulate the qualities articulated in this passage is wise. However, it is a struggle to live this way. Forgive me when I live by the standards of this world instead of your standards. Help me to develop these attributes in my life. Guide me so that whatever I do, whether in action or word, I would do it in the name of Jesus. Amen.
