Take a moment to open this time in prayer. Ask God to bless you as you read and reflect on the text.

Read Judges 7: 1 - 8

In this text God has called out to Gideon and told him to go and defeat the Midianites. However, God believes, and rightfully so, that the Israelites will take credit for the defeat of the Midianites instead of giving the credit to God. Thus, God has Gideon send all but 300 men home so that the people will understand that it is God who is going to bring about the victory. I often believe that we, in the church, can fall into the same trap. How often have we done something in the church and had it go very well but then taken the credit for ourselves instead of giving credit to God? God is always at work in and through us to bless us.

At this time I am thankful for scientists and others who are working to find a vaccine or a treatment for Covid-19. I believe that a vaccine will be found but I wonder if God will get any credit for the vaccine.

Please use the following questions for more reflection.

  • How would you feel if you were Gideon and you brought together 32,000 men to fight the Midianites and God brought the number down to just 300 men? Would you want to go into battle against an army with only 300 men?

  • When have you had something great happen in your life? Did you believe that the event happened because of your hard work, skill, intelligence or effort? Did you ever stop and think that maybe God had something to do with your success?

  • Is it natural for you to thank God or give him credit for your success? Or do you tend to take credit for your success?

Closing - Use the prayer below to end the devotion or close in prayer in your own words.

Gracious Heavenly Father, I thank you that you have not asked me to go into battle against an army with only 300 men because Lord I confess that I would be scared. I also confess that I often take credit for all that goes well in my life and I may blame you for when life is difficult. Lord, forgive me of my fear and my desire to take credit for success and reveal to me all the ways that you are at work in my life to bless me so that I may give you credit and praise your name. Amen.
