Take a moment to open this time in prayer. Ask God to bless you as you read and reflect on

the text.

Read Exodus 17: 1 – 7

This text occurs not long after the Israelites left Egypt. On their way out of Egypt they

experienced many miracles: the Plagues, the Egyptian people willingly giving them silver and

gold and the parting of the Red Sea. Even though the Israelites witnessed all of these miracles, they still complained and wondered if God would take care of them because they needed water. Even though there was no water around God caused water to flow out of a rock; that is amazing! I don’t like to admit it to myself but if I had been in the Israelite crowd I probably would have complained as well. But this text gives me hope that God knows my needs and will take care of me. This hope is certainly important at this time in our country. It would be so easy to complain and wonder where God is in the midst of the current crisis but we must remember that a God who can provide water from a rock will also provide for us.

Please use the following questions for more reflection.

  • How has God provided for you in the past in a difficult circumstance or situation? How did you feel before God provided for you: hopeless, angry at God?

  • If you were in the Israelite crowd do you think you would have complained to God? Why or Why not? What does God’s provision for the Israelites tell you about God’s nature?

  • God gave the people water from a rock. What “water,” do you need at this time?

Closing Prayer – You may use the prayer below to close the time in prayer or pray on you own.

Gracious Heavenly Father, I thank you that you are a God who cares for us. I thank you

that even though we may complain you still love us and hear us. Lord, right now we need

water from a rock in the form of a provision for a cure from the coronavirus. Lord we ask

that you provide that cure, that “water,” from a source that we may not expect.
