Take a moment to open this time in prayer. Ask God to bless you as you read and reflect on the text.

Read Genesis 1: 1 – 5

As I read this text during this time of uncertainty in our country and the world I am comforted with the following thoughts. First, God was there at the beginning of time and thus God is still with his creation today. Second, the Spirit of God hovered over creation and the Spirit of God hovers over us in this time of uncertainty even if we do not perceive it. Third, ever since the creation there has been lightness and darkness. Even though we may feel like we are in a time of darkness the light will come again.

Please use the following questions for more reflection:

  • Why do you think God created the heavens and the earth? Why do you create music, art, food, woodwork, clothing, video etc? Do you put some of yourself into what you create? If so, what does that say about us being part of God’s creation?

  • When have you felt God “hovering,” over you? What were the circumstances of your life at the time? If God “hovered,” over you then is he hovering over you now? Does this bring you a sense of peace?

  • Why do you think that God called the light good? Does that mean that darkness is bad? Why does light seem to bring hope and sunshine brighten our day?

Closing Prayer – You may use the prayer below to close the time in prayer or pray on you own.

Gracious Heavenly Father, I thank you for the truth that you are always with us. We have never experienced anything like this time in our country. I pray for those who are feeling fear that you would bring peace and you light. God I ask that you bring healing to the sick right now and I pray for overall healing of the Coronavirus and an eradication of the disease. Lord I ask that you bring your light into these dark times. I pray this in Jesus’ name and in the power of the Holy Spirit.
