Take a moment to open this time in prayer. Ask God to bless you as you read and reflect on the text.

Read Song of Songs 5: 9 - 16

The Song of Songs or the Song of Solomon, as it has been called, is a story of love and affection between a man and a woman. Some people question why the book is even in the Bible. However, the Church of Jesus Christ in the New Testament is called the Bride of Christ and thus brings to mind that the relationship between Jesus and the Church is somewhat analogous to a marriage relationship between a man and a woman. In the text we read the woman proclaiming the wonderful attributes of her male friend. Often times, especially in difficult times, the Church or individuals in the church, may forget the wonderful attributes and characteristics of Christ. However, this passage calls all of us to remember Jesus love for the Church and for us. It challenges us to remember every day that Jesus is compassionate, gracious, and so good to us.

Please use the following questions for more reflection.

  • What were your initials thoughts of this passage when you first read it? Why would such a book be in the Bible?

  • What does it mean in your opinion that the Church is the bride of Christ? How should this impact our life?

  • What are the attributes or characteristics that you most admire in Jesus?

Closing - Use the prayer below to end the devotion or close in prayer in your own words.

Gracious Heavenly Father, there are many analogies and metaphors in the Bible that are often a mystery to us. There are also passages of the Bible that make us feel a touch uncomfortable. But Lord many of us recall the depth of feeling, the passion and excitement that we experienced when we were attracted to someone. Lord, may our passion and depth of feeling for you be even deeper than our first feelings of attraction for another person. Amen.
