Take a moment to open this time in prayer. Ask God to bless you as you read and reflect on the text.
Read Malachi 1: 6- 8
In the days when the Jewish people were expected to bring animal sacrifices to the temple in Jerusalem there were requirements for those sacrifices. The sacrificial animals were supposed to be as near to perfect as possible. However, in this passage we find out that people were bringing animal sacrifices with all manner of imperfections. In other words the people were not bringing their best or sacrificing their best to God. While we no longer sacrifice animals to God as offerings (thank goodness – could you imagine the mess that would make in the sanctuary) we still make offerings to God. Thus, this passage calls us to examine our own offerings to God. Are we offering God our best or just what we have left over?
Please use the following questions for more reflection.
Read verse 6. How well do you honor God in and with your life?
Do you offer God your best or what you have left over?
When was the last time you truly had to sacrifice for God?
Closing - Use the prayer below to end the devotion or close in prayer in your own words.
Gracious Heavenly Father, this scripture text calls us to examine our own offerings to you. Lord, help me to examine my offerings and help me to do so as honestly as possible. God if I need to change anything about my life and what I offer to you please reveal that to me and please enable me to make those changes. God I want to offer my best to you and not just what I have left over. Amen.
